According to Variety, 2017 was the first year that the horror genre collectively grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.
Below is a chart of the return on investment for the most profitable horror films budgeted under $5 million from 2000 to 2018.
Profitability is expressed as a percentage return on the production budget. So a film which cost $2 million to make and made a producers net profit of $4 million would show up as a profitability of 200%
